The interim government banned the export of Hilsa or Ilish fish earlier this month after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

In anticipation of the upcoming Durga Puja, the largest festival for Bengali Sanatan Hindus in October, the Ministry of Commerce has granted approval for the export of 3,000 tons of ilish to India. This announcement was made in a press release issued by the Ministry

The decision, aimed at ensuring sufficient supply for local consumers, was announced by the Adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

The advisor to the Bangladesh Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock – Farida Akhter – had confirmed the ban of the export of ilish to India citing they need to ensure sufficient supply for local consumers.

Bangladesh looks to prioritise domestic consumption over exports of Padma hilsa which means India may not receive the ilish fish this Durga Puja.

The Bangladesh government announced on Saturday that it has allowed the export of 3,000 metric tons of Hilsa fish to India ahead of 10-day-long auspicious Durga Puja celebrations.

Earlier, the Bangladesh interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, decided to go against exporting hilsa to India this year to boost domestic supply.
