Spain's Costa del Sol is on red alert for 'extreme risk' of flooding as thousands have been evacuated from their homes and schools remain closed following new storm warnings

Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes near the Costa del Sol, one of areas in southern Spain most loved by British tourists.The evacuation was sparked amid new flooding fears after a weather alert for the area went from yellow to red and locals and holidaymakers were warned: "There is 'extreme risk'.

Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia were pelted with mud by crowds during their visit to the region last week, as anger fermented among communities who said they felt abandoned by authorities in the wake of the natural disaster, with troops and police deployed to assist communities in affected areas.

Flood-hit towns near the eastern city of Valencia were rushing on Tuesday to clear the sewage system of mud and debris, pile sandbags and cancel school classes as they prepared for another approaching storm.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced a new economic relief package for victims of the storms that killed more than 220 people in the country’s worst natural disaster in more than six decades.
