Republican Sen. Lonnie Paxton will be the chamber's new president pro tem. Sen. Julia Kirt will lead the Democratic caucus

Tuesday’s election swept in several new House and Senate members vying for open seats, but also proved to be a good night for incumbents. Not a single incumbent state House or Senate lawmaker lost Tuesday.

OKALHOMA CITY (KSWO) - The Oklahoma Democratic Caucus will be ushering in new leadership on Wednesday, Nov. 13. For the past six years, Sen. Kay Floyd (D-OKC) led Senate Democrats through a Republican-held Senate Chamber.

A Republican state senator from Tuttle has been selected as the next leader of the upper chamber of the Oklahoma Legislature. Members of the Senate’s majority Republican caucus announced Tuesday their selection of Lonnie Paxton as the next Senate president pro tem.

Following the election, Republicans will control the Senate with a 53 to 47 majority, but one question remains -- who will become the new Senate majority leader? Outgoing leader Mitch McConnell will remain in Congress but will step aside as the longest serving party leader in history.
