The U.S. postmaster general would be subject to term limits and Senate confirmation under legislation introduced Wednesday by Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga.

As the U.S. Postal Service faces delivery slowdowns, U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, a Democrat from Georgia, has proposed legislation to impose stricter oversight on who leads the agency.

Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff is expected to hold a news conference on Wednesday to propose “major legislation” that would change how U.S. postmaster generals are appointed and how long they serve.

The proposed legislation, dubbed the Postmaster General Reform Act of 2024, aims to amend current law by giving the president the power to appoint the Postmaster General with the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate. "We must hold the postmaster general accountable," said Osoff in a Wednesday press conference.

Currently, the Postmaster General has no term limit on serving in office and is selected by the USPS Board of Governors.
